COALITION
UPDATED July 21, 2016
It's been a few weeks since our first activation for the Eugene Mission fire. The purpose of this update is to send out some HUGE thanks and an update on their situation. There were many, many community organizations that helped out the Mission and it was great to see the community support. Specifically, through our COAD network, our awesome members stepped up:
Boys and Girls Club offered the use of their kitchen space
Lane County Public Health found leads on commercial kitchen space that was nearby
SnoTemp Cold Storage, within minutes, had refrigeration space available for perishable food items
St. Vincent de Paul provided a truck to use for storage and transportation
FOOD for Lane County provided meals and food
It was amazing to see the COAD network in action and see what we can do together when there is a community need. Thank you to all who responded, even if the resource wasn't needed in the end. The Mission is now set up with a mobile kitchen unit and a temporary serving space. When the COAD Chair checked in this week to see how they were doing, they were upbeat and positive that things are going well. The one remaining need they identified is disposable plates, bowls, cups, and utensils, as they are serving 750 meals a day without a real dishwasher right now. If anyone has any to donate, or has any leads on these items, please use the response form on this webpage.
Thank you again for helping out during our first activation! We learned some lessons which will be shared at our upcoming meeting, July 28 from 3-4:30 p.m. at United Way.
UPDATED JUNE 16, 2016 16:55
They have changed their meal prep plans and no longer need kitchen space. They will be getting a huge mobile kitchen delivered to their site to meet their food needs, but it has to come from California. In the meantime the Eugene Mission needs the following:
For the next three days (June 17, 18, & 19), the Eugene Mission is in need of food that is READY TO EAT: individual salads, pizzas, sandwiches and burritos as well as things like instant coffee, sugar, peanut butter, jelly, cereal and granola.
Starting Saturday, June 18 through Sunday, June 26, 2016 they need churches and organizations to provide HOT AND READY TO SERVE meals: 200 lunches and 300 dinners each day . Fill out the contact form on this webpage is your organization can respond to this need. We need lunch here by 11:00 am and dinner here by 4:30 pm.
Saturday June 18, 2016 they will need more volunteers for our biggest event of the year, the Eugene Food Truck Festival (yes, we're still doing it!). With the fire, many staff have needed to pull back from the event to keep the mission running. Volunteers are needed 10 am - 3 pm sduring the event and then 3 pm - 5 pm for clean up.
The Eugene Mission also needs monetary donations! The cost of clean up and rebuilding has yet to be determined, but they know it won't be cheap. Can you help?
Food and other donations will be accepted at the Eugene Mission located at 1542 W. 1st Ave., Eugene, OR 97402
ACTIVATED JUNE 16, 2016 13:00
Many of you have heard about last night’s fire at the Eugene Mission. Thankfully, there were no major injuries, but their operations are significantly impacted and their kitchen is currently inoperable. This is the kind of community disaster that could use the COAD's help. Frank Spangler from the American Red Cross, one of our COAD members, has been in touch with the Mission and has a list of their immediate needs.
NEEDS
A refrigeration trailer for non-frozen foods
A kitchen that can support the following:
300 for breakfast
200 for lunch
300 for dinner
A commercial laundry service if possible
They have no need for shelter, bedding, or clothing.
This is our first activation as a COAD and we will try to remain as coordinated as our guiding principles suggest.
